KYLP Champion Awards Dinner to honor State Senator Karen Berg, Lussi Brown Coffee Bar for their support of LGBTQIA+ children and youth

The Board of Directors of the Kentucky Youth Law Project, Inc., cordially invites you to the Second Annual KYLP Champion Awards Sunday evening, April 21, 2024 from 5:30 to 9:00 at The Foundry on Broadway, 317 Broadway Street, Frankfort, Kentucky. This year's event will be a dinner to honor Senator Karen Berg of Louisville for her legislative advocacy to protect the rights of LGBTQIA+ children and youth; and Lussi Brown Coffee Bar of Lexington, for their support of the LGBTQIA+ community. Our keynote speaker will be the Honorable Pamela R. Goodwine, Judge for the Fifth District of the Kentucky Court of Appeals.

A catered meal will be provided by Fork, Knife, and Spoon Catering of Frankfort. Each guest will receive a drink ticket at the Registration Table. Drink tickets entitle the bearer to one free drink per ticket and are redeemable at the Cash Bar (wine, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages only) Since we are anticipating that there will be youth under the legal drinking age, everyone will be asked to show their Photo ID at the Registration Table and the appropriate drink ticket will be given to our guests, which entitle them to one free drink per ticket. We appreciate your patience with the registration process.

All donations will be added to our General Fund and will be used in the following ways:

  • To help pay court costs and recording fees for our name change clients;
  • To fund our outreach efforts, including tabling opportunities at pride festivals and other events around the state; and
  • To train lawyers, judges, court staff, educators, social workers, and foster parents regarding the vital importance of protecting the legal rights of LGBTQIA+ youth.

In addition, in 2023, with a generous grant from the It Gets Better Fund, KYLP helped create two community lending libraries to provide information and resources for LGBTQIA+ children and youth in rural Appalachian communities, and co-hosted our first Rural Rainbow Youth Conference in Mount Sterling last November.

Last year, we received about $29,000 in donations, primarily from individuals, of which nearly $20,000 went to fund programs such as the ones mentioned above.

Finally, we should note that KYLP is an all-volunteer organization at this time. All of our board members and other volunteers give of their time, their talents, and their energy to ensure that KYLP is successful in our mission to provide free legal representation and advocacy for Kentucky's LGBTQIA+ children and youth.

We appreciate our donors because they believe our work has value. One of the reasons we have created the annual Champion Awards events, in addition to honoring those individuals and organizations who have championed the rights of LGBTQIA+ youth, is so that we can provide an opportunity for our donors and supporters to mingle, learn about some of the important work we are doing, such as our new initiative to build a Youth Ambassador program, and feel a sense of community in this fairly hostile state.

We are looking forward to seeing you at this year's Champion Awards Dinner in Frankfort!
